The manned submersible Alvin is fitted with a set of these weights before each dive. It sinks with their aid, and then drops them on the seafloor when it’s time for the sub to return to the surface. While they’re waiting for their big day, the weights are stored on the main ship’s deck, becoming weathered before they ever see use.
